I was interested by the continuity between these things that were all “empty shells,” once objects that contained life and function and purpose, but were now remains and artifacts of what was no longer there. The fossil is a trilobite, and the shells contained in the antique bottle I had collected on visits to beaches. This was painted with Windsor and Newton oil paints on a Raymar oil paper panel.
