Gift Of The Old Ones
In the early 1990s, I traveled with two fellow artists to the West Coast to research wild horses. We spent some time at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California, where we encountered these two mares and "their" foal. Mama, in the lead, was probably in her last year and in the process of handing the little one off to Auntie. Though the rigors of living in the wild had taken their toll on mature bodies, nothing could mask the deep, inherent beauty also being imparted to the next generation.
After several days there, we headed north to the Steens Mountains of Oregon... (which, of course, is another story!)
